Administrative & Legal Requirements
In order to ensure that the publishing process remains as simple and painless as possible, Benchmark Press will manage all of the legal and administrative requirements involved in publishing your book and calendar.
All published works require an ISBN Number and a barcode. Works must also contain a legal deposit and be registered with the Canadian Cataloguing in Publication Index. As your partner in publishing, Benchmark Press will handle these administrative and legal requirements for you. We will also secure copyright protection for your work to protect it from anyone who may steal your words and ideas.
An ISBN Number (International Standard Book Number) is a 10, soon to be a 13, digit identification code that is used for books, calendars, pamphlets, microforms, CD-ROMs, educational kits and other electronic and digital publications. The code will be used internationally by booksellers, publishers, libraries and others to identify your work, which will aid in both the ordering and distribution of either your book or calendar. Through the ISBN Number, individuals can learn the country or language the work was published in, the publisher’s name, and the title of either your book or calendar.
Once your book has been assigned an ISBN Number, it will be recorded in the Canadian ISBN Publishers’ Directory. This directory was established by Library and Archives Canada to feature the names and contact information of Canadian publishes, both current and past, who obtain ISBN Numbers.

All Canadian publishers are required to submit, free-of-charge,
two copies of all books, serial publications, video recordings, spoken word
recordings, electronic publications and pamphlets to Library and Archives
Canada. The Legal Deposit is designed to act as a national collection of all
the works published in Canada to maintain the country’s published heritage.

Canadian Cataloguing in Publication Index
Through the Cataloguing in Publication (CIP) Index, which is controlled by Library and Archives Canada, unreleased books are compiled in a list, free-of-charge, which is distributed to Canadian bookstores and libraries. Overall, the CIP Index aids in the promotion of your book.
Publishers are required to submit an application form that
includes the book’s title, author, subject matter and other pertinent details
that will be used to create a catalogue record for the book. This record is
then printed on the left hand side of the title page, so that it can be easily
identified.

Original literary, musical, dramatic and artistic works qualify for copyright protection. Books, calendars, articles, illustrations, sculpture, photographs, etc. are protected under the Copyright Act. According to the Act, an original work is owned by the author, but if you complete a work during your employment, that work belongs to your employer.
Although copyrighted materials do not require the use of the © copyright symbol, it is recommended to ensure the highest level of international protection. In Canada, a work is protected under copyright laws throughout the life of the author and for an additional 50 years after his/her death.
